TMJ Disorder Treatment

The temporomandibular joint is located on each side of the jaw and connects the bone itself to the skull. Normally, no discomfort is felt as the joints move with the jaw when a person speaks or eats, but dysfunction can still occur. Our Tampa, FL, dentist can work to remedy this dysfunction through TMJ disorder treatment that may include a combination of oral appliances like night guards, physical therapy, medications for pain and inflammation, and stress management techniques to use at home. In severe cases, surgical interventions might be necessary but are a last resort.

How Common Are TMJ Disorders?

Identifying TMJ dysfunction early can prevent the condition from worsening and improve the success of any given treatment. Common signs include persistent pain or tenderness in the jaw, difficulty chewing, and a clicking or popping sound when opening or closing the mouth.

Other symptoms may include headaches, what feels like earaches, facial pain, and locking of the jaw joint, making it challenging to open or close the mouth fully. Some individuals might also experience swelling on the side of the face or a noticeable shift in the alignment of the teeth. If you notice any of these symptoms, give our office a call so we can determine if TMJ disorder is the cause.
